Lucy and Blue, a children's adventure book series from the United Kingdom, is highlighting the safety lessons it teaches young readers. The series was founded by Senior Fire Officer Lucy Macleod and her trauma and wellbeing dog Blue. Macleod has served more than 17 years in the UK Fire and Rescue Service and also teaches children's safety lessons in classrooms. Schools can book a classroom safety session, and Macleod runs these 2 sessions a month free of charge.

The illustrated books are written for readers aged 3 to 12. They cover how to stay safe in an emergency and how to look after yourself and others, alongside teamwork and the work of the emergency services. The first book, Lucy and Blue Save the Day, introduces the duo from Station 22 and includes activities and colouring pages at the back. Rescue, Rubble and Rewards follows a building collapse and introduces specialist dog handler Lindsay and her search dog Davey, drone operator Lee and rescue expert Dave, showing how search dogs, technology and crews work together. It includes activities and questions at the back. In that story, Blue offers comfort and calm in moments of fear.

Hiking Harnesses and Horrible Weather looks at mountain rescue, and Worrying Wildfires looks at accidental fires and why they are so dangerous. Books cost £10.50 and are sold through lucyandblue.com. A portion of the profits from each book goes to a dedicated charity. For Rescue, Rubble and Rewards, that is the National Foundation for Retired Service Animals, which supports the care and wellbeing of retired service animals.

"I want children to feel ready, not frightened, when they think about emergencies. If a story helps one child know what to do, it has done its job."
Lucy Macleod , Senior Fire Officer , Lucy and Blue

The stories are inspired by Macleod's real work responding to emergencies and by Blue, who supports people in crisis and spreads calm, connection and compassion. Macleod calls Blue her Buffer and Bridge, as he helps her have difficult conversations whilst keeping people feel safe.. The series aims to help children understand emergency situations in a safe and engaging way. It also sets out to break down stereotypes, celebrate diversity and spark conversations about courage, kindness and inclusion in the emergency services and beyond. The team's view is simple: when children can see it, they can be it. Real life heroes star in each book.

Lucy and Blue - Hiking Harnesses and Horrible Weather is out now, as is Worrying Wildfires. Macleod's top tip for parents is to read the books with their children and learn together how to be safe in a variety of different emergencies. Copies can be ordered at lucyandblue.com, where schools can also arrange a free classroom safety session.
